2010 // 8th Forum Passeurs d’images

The 8th edition of the Passeurs d’Images National Forum took place between December 16th and 18th 2010 in the WIP in la Villette.

Roundtables, film screenings, workshops on film practises, film-slam show (interactive images and slam – open scene), these three days are the opportunity to bring together numerous film professionals, everyone involved in the operation as well as a hundred young people from all over France who would show their workshop films.

Open to the public, this 8th forum is based on the theme of Diversity (in the media, in the public reception of movies and in new audio-visual formats – doc-web, machinimas -)

More than twenty lecturers will present their project and share with us their reflections on diversity regarding image literacy : Rokhaya Diallo (president of the association Les Indivisibles), Jean-Pierre Esquenazi (sociologist), Zangro (co-founder of the islamic humoristic site : À part ça tout va bien), Frédéric Borgia for the Actualités Démocratiques (Democratic news) (cinémas 93), director Olivier Hems (for his short film Nous), Antoine Ravat, who works in the the cinema Le France in St-Étienne, videoartists and artists from the slammers from the association Slam & Cie...

Thursday 16th December : Fictional worlds in new media

From machinimas to webdocumentaires, we will talk about a few symptomatic formats of what we call Web 2.0 or collaborative Web, which provide us with at times peculiar portrayal of our world and of our relations to others.

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. : Meeting with journalist David DUFRESNE who will present Prison Valley, l’industrie de la prison, a web documentary which he co-directed with photographer Philippe BRAULT.

5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. : Roundtable discussion on contemporary audiovisual formats with Alexis BLANCHET (searcher and writer of « Des pixels à Hollywood »), Erwan DEFACHELLES (video artist and teacher), Mehdi DERFOUFI (film critic) et Jean-Marc GÉNUITE (image literacy advisor for Passeurs d’images)

Friday 17th December : How to approach diversity in a new way ?

Which diversity in media ? Which diversity in the public’s perception of a film ?

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. : Diversity of eyes : Adults take hold of Passeurs d’images

Presentation of two Passeurs d’images films directed by adults, supervised by a professional director : projections and exchanges between directors and/or project owners and the public.

11:00 a.m. – 13:00 p.m. : Which cultural diversity exist in the media ?
- Diversity policies in television : stakes and limits (with Tristan MATTELART, sociologist, communication teacher in the University Paris 8) :
- Presentation of Indivisibles, the media as the sound box of stereotypes and diffuse racism ? (with Rokhaya DIALLO, president of the association Les Indivisibles) :
- To give more presence to suburban media (with Farid MEBARKI, president of Presse & Cité, association supporting all suburban media)
- Projection of Mix Cité, Passeurs d’images’ workshop film – parody of all the cliches existing on ethnical minorities, humour as a denunciation tool (with Samira KEBDANI, moderator in the association Loisirs pour tous, and 5 young participants).

Debate moderated by the journalist Thomas DELTOMBE.

Lunch break : Workshop Film à trou :
Antoine RAVAT will offer a group of young people the possibility to take part in a workshop on shots and reverse shots. Each shooting team will imagine, direct, shoot and add a missing shot in the scene of a pre-existing film. A restitution of all shot scenes will be screened at the end of the day.

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Diversity of publics, diversity of a film perception
- Reflections on a film reception according to the context and its public (with Jean-Pierre ESQUENAZI, sociologist, teacher at the University Lyon III, and his works on reception and the publics of “high” culture and popular culture).
- To play with the expected reception in order to surprise the receiving person (with ZANGRO, co-founder of the site À part ça tout va bien).
- Actualités démocratiques, (Democratic news) between diversified receptions and public diversification (with Frédéric BORGIA, owner of the Cinémas 93) : presentation of documentaries directed with Passeurs d’images.
- Presentation of the programming workshop Ciné Cité implemented during the Resistances festival : to organise a screening for a specific public (with Valérie GUILLAUDOT, coordinator of the Resistances festival in Foix, and Barka AKHAMAL, workshop moderator - Passeurs d’Images, Foix).
- Which public and which receptions for a largely distributed film ? (with Claire DIAO, coordinator of the association Tribudom, will talk about Reyah, a film directed with the group Femmes du monde (Women of the world) in the 20th arrondissement in Paris).

7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. : Spectacle de CINÉ-SLAM
Slammers (Ella DILAFÉ, TÔ, Félix JOUSSERAND, Victor ZARCA, SHEIN B, YAS) and workshop participants will slam on interactive images created by Eric DAVIRON (Collectif MU). The slammed images and texts play with the 10 words selected during the French language and French-speaking world Week 2011 (“networking”, “thread”, “harmoniously”...)

Music arrangement : Philip GRIFFITHS (MU).

The evening will end with a stage open for all !
(in partnership with the General Delegation for French Language and Languages of France (ministry of Culture and Communication), the Association MU, Slam & Cie and the Centre Fleury Goutte d’Or - Barbara)

Saturday 18th December : A vous les jeunes ! (It’s your go youngsters) Projections and exchanges about their films

During the first part of the morning, young people will present their films for which they worked particularly on the sound, music-wise, noise-wise or speech-wise. During the second part of the morning, young people will offer remakes and show how they can make images their own, during a funny and bizarre show, which will pay hommage to great directors and cult films.
The importance of sound and the autoreflexive influence of films will be addressed by aspiring directors, along with two professional directors.

Lunch break : Film à trou workshop :
Antoine RAVAT will offer a group of young people the opportunity to participate in a workshop on shots/countershots. Each shooting team will think, direct, shoot and edit a missing shot in a preexisting film sequence. A reproduction of all shot sequences will be screened at the end of the day.

Projection of “favourite” workshop films directed between 2009 and 2010. An afternoon dedicated to all sorts of films will be devoted to the funniest, most moving and most original films... Young participants will show their film and will exchange with a director who will be there as a favoured viewer.
The afternoon will end on a playful note, when young participants will have the opportunity to attend a soundtrack workshop.

As a reminder to the first theme of the day, Antoine RAVAT (In charge of the operation Passeurs d’images in the cinema Le France in Saint-Étienne) will give the opportunity to young participants and to the public to discover the world of sounds in a playful and interactive way, by recording live a film soundtrack, standing just next to the projection screen.
